Contributions to SBCM 2017 may take the form of full papers, posters and art, as detailed below. All submissions are expected to be uploaded using the JEMS system. All full papers must be written in English, and all oral presentations shall be delivered in English. Extended abstracts referring to posters and art submissions may be written in either English or Portuguese, but English is strongly preferred. All papers and extended abstracts will be included in the electronic proceedings, which will be freely available in the SBCM homepage.

Authors of accepted submissions are expected to register before the author registration deadline (early-bird registration), i.e. by July 7th 2017 (see Important Dates). Each accepted submission must be accompanied by a matching registration by one of its authors, in the sense that each registration ensures the inclusion of one matching submission in the proceedings.

Papers and posters are expected to be classified under some of the following topics; this is done to help peer-review matching during the revision phase, and this list is by no means exhaustive. Some topics (e.g. “Sound Analysis and Synthesis” or “Music Analysis and Synthesis”) are deliberately broad in order to better accommodate most papers, and many topics overlap; you should select between 1 and 4 topics that best characterize your submission.

  • Acoustics, Diffusion and Sonorization
  • Artificial Intelligence, A-Life and Evolutionary Music Systems
  • Audio Hardware Design
  • Brain-Computer Interfaces and Physiological Signals
  • Computer-Aided Music Education

Full Papers

Full papers, which may be technically or musically focused, are expected to present original research, and will be communicated in oral presentations. Music papers are expected to deal with actual instances of music or sound art pieces, which must be included in the submission. All full papers must be written in English, and all oral presentations shall be delivered in English.

Full papers must be submitted in PDF format via the JEMS online submission system, and must have between 4 and 8 pages (ideally 6 pages) using the provided templates. Please note that full paper submissions are anonymous for double-blind peer review. Please carefully comply with the instructions contained in these templates, since nonconforming papers cannot be published. Download template files for manuscript preparation using this link. When you upload your paper, please select between 1 and 4 topics from the list above.

Posters

Posters, which are accompanied by extended abstracts and may also be technically or musically focused (with accompanying music pieces), are expected to bring ongoing research open to debate and contributions from participants during specific gatherings, the Poster Discussion Sessions. Extended abstracts referring to posters may be written in either English or Portuguese, but English is strongly preferred.

Extended abstracts of posters must be submitted in PDF format via the JEMS online submission system, and cannot exceed a 2-page limitation using the provided templates. Please note that poster submissions are anonymous for double-blind peer review. Please carefully comply with the instructions contained in these templates, since nonconforming abstracts cannot be published. Download template files for manuscript preparation using this link. When you upload your abstract, please select between 1 and 4 topics from the list above.

Art

Art can take the form of compositions, performances, installations or objects, which will be presented either in concerts or exhibition rooms; artistic pieces are also required to be accompanied by extended abstracts, describing how art, science and technology come together in the creative process. There is no a priori restriction on the setup, with the proviso that performers, instruments and special equipment are supposed to be brought in by the proponent (with the exception of piano, soundboard, speakers and mics, which may be requested in advance). Extended abstracts referring to art submissions may be written in either English or Portuguese, but English is strongly preferred.

Extended abstracts of artistic pieces must be submitted in PDF format via the JEMS online submission system, and cannot exceed a 2-page limitation using the provided templates. Please note that Art submissions are not anoymous. Please carefully comply with the instructions contained in these templates, since nonconforming abstracts cannot be published. Download template files for manuscript preparation using this link. When you upload your abstract, please select between 1 and 4 topics from the list above.

Artistic material/media must be made available for electronic download (HTTP or FTP) as a single ZIP or RAR archive, containing the following:

  • one PDF document specifying the following information about the artistic submission:
    • Author name(s), affiliations (if relevant), and contact information
    • Title of the proposal
    • Program notes (1-3 paragraphs)
    • Indication if the performance relates to a separate presentation in the technical program (in this case, please specify the title, authors and submission number of the separate submission)
    • Intended venue: evening concert, installation, etc.
    • Duration and instrumentation
    • Names of performers, if applicable
    • Composer / performer bios or a link to where these can be found online
    • Detailed description of technical requirements, including equipment and setup time
    • Stage plot and input list for live performances
  • All performer scores (if applicable)
  • Audio file(s) for evaluation of the submission. For multichannel submissions, please provide also a stereo mix.
  • Video files (optional).

Please note that this archive file is not going to be submitted through JEMS, only its link for download should be included in the electronic submission. Media files must use codecs readily played by widely used software such as VLC, Quick Time, MPEG Streamclip, etc.
