The development of Computer Music has always been linked to the various languages and systems of programming dedicated to sound and music, since the early experiments by Mathews in 1958. In the 21st century, these systems were developed to a significant level of sophistication, placing them as ideal candidates for Ubiquitous Music applications. This talk will trace such developments, from a historical perspective and will discuss the current state of the art, with the objective of providing a general vision of its possibilities for musicians and composers interested in ubiquitous applications.

Victor Lazzarini (1969), was born in Londrina, southern Brazil. Senior Lecturer in Music at the NUI Maynooth, and composer. He is a graduate from the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP), Brazil, where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Music, specialising in Music Compositon. In 1996, he completed his doctorate at the University of Nottingham, concentrating on electroacoustic and computer music. Awards received include an Honour Mention for his orchestral piece Anima Mea, in Brazil (1995); the Heyman Research Scholarship, for his doctorate research; the Hallward Composition Prize, for his Magnificat, in England (1996); the NUI New Researcher Award (2000), for his work at NUI Maynooth; and the IMRO/AIC International Composition Prize for Dance of the Dawn (2006). Among his recent publications, we have The Audio Programming Book (with R. Boulanger, MIT Press, 2010) and the CD Voices Inside (FarPoint Recordings, 2009). Currently, he coordinates PG and Research activities at the Department of Music and leads the Sound and Digital Music Technology Research Group at NUI Maynooth. His musical interests also include jazz composition and performance.

The Sound and Digital Music Technology Group, NUI Maynooth, has been in activity since 2003, composed by staff and research students from the depts. of Music and Computer Science, who share an interest in musical signal processing, computer music and composition. The group is led by Dr Victor Lazzarini and is currently made up of 4 staff and 8 students. Its scientific output includes articles in reputable international journals in the area Computer Music Journal, Journal of the AES, EURASIP Journal of Advances in Signal Processing, Organised Sound), as well as participation in various international conferences. In addition, the group is involved in the development and maintenance of software for audio signal processing (ie. the SndObj library) and collaborates in international efforts (such as the development of Csound).
