Contributions to SBCM 2019 may take the form of full papers, posters, workshops or art, as detailed below. All submissions are expected to be uploaded using the JEMS system. All full papers must be written in English, and all oral presentations shall be delivered in English. Extended abstracts referring to posters and art submissions may be written in either English or Portuguese, but English is strongly preferred. Authors of accepted submissions are expected to register before the author registration deadline (early-bird registration - see Important Dates). Each accepted submission must have at least one of its authors registered to present the work in the event and to be published in the proceedings.

Papers and posters are expected to be classified under the following topics; this is done to help peer-review matching during the revision phase, and this list is by no means exhaustive. Some topics (e.g. “Sound Analysis and Synthesis” or “Music Analysis and Synthesis”) are deliberately broad in order to better accommodate most papers, and many topics overlap. You should select between 1 and 4 topics that best characterize your submission.

  • Acoustics, Diffusion and Sonorization
  • Artificial Intelligence, A-Life and Evolutionary Music Systems
  • Audio Hardware Design
  • Brain-Computer Interfaces and Physiological Signals
  • Computer-Aided Music Education
  • Computational Musicology

Full Papers

Full papers, which may be technically or musically focused, are expected to present original research, and will be communicated in oral presentations. All full papers must be written in English, and all oral presentations shall be delivered in English. Full papers must be submitted in PDF format via the JEMS online submission system and must be up to 8 pages long using the provided template. Please note that full paper submissions are anonymous for double-blind peer review. Please carefully comply with the instructions contained in these templates, since nonconforming papers cannot be published.

Posters

Posters, which are accompanied by extended abstracts and may also be technically or musically focused (with accompanying music pieces), are expected to bring ongoing research open to debate and contributions from participants during specific gatherings, the Poster Discussion Sessions. Extended abstracts referring to posters may be written in English.

Extended abstracts of posters must be submitted in PDF format via the JEMS online submission system, and cannot exceed a 2-page limitation using the provided template. Please note that poster submissions are anonymous for double-blind peer review. Please carefully comply with the instructions contained in these templates, since nonconforming abstracts cannot be published.

Workshops

Workshops are four hours long hands-on activities on topics that are interesting for the computer music community. The required space, equipments and materials are expected to be brought by the proponents. Workshop proposals are anonymous and must be submitted in PDF format via the JEMS online submission system. It must use the same template as the full papers. They cannot exceed one page, and must include title, abstract, program and information on the target audience, in special regarding the required experience (e.g., whether experience in electronics, programming or musical composition is necessary to take part into the workshop). The proposals can be written either in English or Portuguese, but English is strongly preferred. Likewise, workshops can be delivered either in English or Portuguese, but English is strongly preferred. The proposals are subject to additional evaluation regarding their physical space requirements.

Art

Art can take the form of compositions, performances, installations or objects, which will be presented either in concerts or exhibition rooms. Artistic pieces are also required to be accompanied by extended abstracts, describing how art, science and technology come together in the creative process. There is not a priori restriction on the setup, with the proviso that performers, instruments and special equipment are supposed to be brought in by the proponent (with the exception of piano and speakers, which may be requested in advance). The technical viability of the art submissions will also be evaluated according to their required conditions and their fitness regarding the physical space.

Extended abstracts referring to art submissions should be written in English, must be submitted in PDF format via the JEMS online submission system, and cannot exceed a 2-page limitation using the provided paper template. Please carefully comply with the instructions contained in the templates, since nonconforming abstracts cannot be published. Please note that art submissions are anonymous for double-blind peer review.

It is also necessary to submit an Art Submission Form as a PDF document specifying the following information about the artistic submission (you should use the form available in the template page to submit it.):

  • Author name(s), affiliations (if relevant), and contact information
  • Title of the proposal
  • Program notes (1-3 paragraphs)
  • Intended venue: evening concert, installation, etc.
  • Duration and instrumentation
  • Names of performers, if applicable
  • Composer / performer bios
  • Detailed description of technical requirements, including equipment and setup time
  • Stage plot and input list for live performances
  • Indication if the performance relates to a separate presentation in the technical program (in this case, please specify the title, authors and submission number of the separate submission)

Artistic material/media must be made available as a single ZIP or RAR archive, also submitted through JEMS online submission system, containing the following:

  • Performer scores (if applicable)
  • Audio (stereo mix) and/or video file(s) for evaluation of the submission. Please notice that sending video files are encouraged as they may be of special value in evaluating your submission.

In case your archive exceeds 1GB, instead of uploading it you should provide a PDF text informing a link (HTTP or FTP address) for download of your Artistic material/media. For double-blind review, please use an anonymous download link to submit this material. Media files must use codecs readily played by widely used software such as VLC, Quick Time, MPEG Streamclip, etc.

Research group report

A research group report is a topic to present actual research developed in institutions like Universities and / or Research centers focused on Computer Music subjects. We are desiring to know about your projects, students involved, software developed, research focus and other subjects that can be interesting to the whole community. Since a research lab can host several different projects and maybe the individual outcome of these projects would be submitted as a full paper or a poster, it would be nice to understand the research activity of the lab in general and maybe this paper can connect all the projects developed by a research team.

This submission must be up to 8 pages using the provided template, must be written in English, in PDF format via the JEMS online submission system, and all oral presentations shall be delivered in English. Please note that research group report submissions do not have to be anonymous.

If you have any questions regarding the submission process, please contact the organizing committee using the e-mail addresses on our Contact Page.
